Utilize Pond Filters for a Healthy and Happy Pond This Season

As any successful pond owner knows, the key to having a healthy pond is to have a clean pond. In my previous posts I’ve discussed how you can utilize pond skimmers and pond vacuums to clean dirt and debris from your pond’s water. However, in order to keep your pond water as clean and healthy as possible, it’s also necessary to install a pond filter.

Out of all the pond supplies your water garden needs to flourish, pond filters are one of the most important. These small machines work around the clock as mini sewage systems for your pond. Every day fish waste, extra food and other organic material falls to the bottom of your pond. All of this debris can dirty your pond water, and as it starts to decompose it can also release harmful toxins. Without pond filters, your pond water would be permanently murky and any dangerous toxins would build up and start to affect the health of your pond life.

Pond filters utilize filter media to break down harmful toxins and remove debris from your pond water to create a healthy environment in which pond life can flourish. They come in different sizes and offer varying degrees of filtration so you can shop around until you find one that meets your pond’s specific needs.

Any good pond filter is designed to perform three functions:

• Mechanical Filtration
• Biological Filtration
• Chemical Filtration

Mechanical filtration is utilized to remove actual detritus from your water. Dirty water flows into the filter and the mechanical filtration media traps any dirt before sending clean water back into your pond.

Biological filtration tackles the toxins that form when fish waste and other organic material breaks down. This filtration media allows beneficial bacteria to grow that can biologically break down the harmful toxins in your pond water.

Chemical filter media and pond plants manage any remaining compounds by controlling and changing the specific water conditions that are negatively impacting your pond.

As you can see, pond filters work hard to keep your water sparkling clean. Be sure to utilize this pond product to keep your pond life happy and healthy this season.

Promote Pond Health: Purchase a Pond Skimmer This Season

It’s official – warm weather is here to stay, and that’s good news for all you pond enthusiasts who have been itching to sit outside and enjoy your pond in all its glory. Make sure your pond stays clean and healthy by purchasing and installing a quality pond skimmer this season.

There is no substitute for these efficient and effective pond supplies. A pond skimmer is your biggest defense against leaves, branches, pollen, flowers and other pesky debris that threaten to dirty your water and clog your pond filter. It collects particles from the surface of the water allowing it to always appear clear and healthy-looking. The best part about pond skimmers, however, is that they don’t detract from your pond’s aesthetic appeal.

Pond skimmers are designed to be easily hidden or disguised so that your pond remains natural-looking and beautiful. Some come with artificial covers while others can be easily concealed by shrubbery. In addition to providing complete filtration, a good pond skimmer should also:

• Support biological health
• Improve water quality
• Reduce pond maintenance
• Hide unsightly pumps and plumbing
• Prevent large debris from clogging your pond filter
• Keep pond life safe, healthy and happy

Many pond skimmers also come with a variety of accessories that allow you to customize your model for every application. They should be built tough to handle foot traffic and support any kind of natural camouflage you want to use.

Clean Your Pond the Easy Way with Pond Vacuums

In my previous post on “Getting Your Pond Ready for Spring” I discussed the importance of cleaning your pond in preparation for the spring season. However, now that the season is well under way, you need to continue working to maintain that level of cleanliness. Your pond life will only flourish in a healthy environment, and keeping the water clean is one major aspect of that.

Pond skimmers are a great way to collect debris and dirt from the surface of the water on a daily basis, but sometimes your pond needs a more thorough cleaning. Small and stubborn detritus that slips through the average pond skimmer can build up over time and dirty your pond water. Prevent this from happening by regularly using a pond vacuum.

Pond vacuums are some of the most popular pond supplies, because they are convenient, easy to use and make cleaning your pond a snap. They work just like the vacuum cleaner you use inside your home, but they suction algae blooms, fish waste, dead leaves, and other dirt out of your pond. Pond vacuums are particularly effective at cleaning the stubborn debris that settles and sticks to your pond’s floor.

A quality pond vacuum should come with a variety of different nozzles that will enable you to reach every nook and cranny of your pond. They are available in different watt capacities so you can choose one that has the right amount of power for you. Some other features that can be helpful are:

• A multi-chambered system
• Rigid suction tubes
• An extension pole
• Large debris bag
A cordless option

Keep your pond clean and healthy this season. Find the pond vacuum that best meets your needs today!
