How to Get Your Pond Ready for Winter: Part 3

In my final post on pond winterization, I will be discussing how to properly prepare your fish and plant life for the cold months ahead.

Getting Your Fish Ready for Winter

Many people are concerned about their fish not making it through the winter. However, if you follow these simple rules, you shouldn't have any problem:

Don't overfeed your fish. The metabolism of fish is controlled primarily by water temperature. This means that as your water gets colder, your fish need smaller amounts of food and less protein. Protein is harder to digest, so if you feed your fish high-protein food in cold water, they are going to excrete the extra as ammonia. A build-up of ammonia in the water stresses your fish and reduces their ability to survive.

How do you solve this problem? Once the water temperature drops to about 65 degrees Fahrenheit, start feeding your fish Spring & Autumn fish food. Then stop feeding your fish altogether once the temperature drops to about 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Their metabolism will be completely slowed down at that point, and they can survive without food until spring.

Make sure a section of your pond is at least 18 inches deep. As the weather gets colder, your fish will migrate to the deepest part of your pond to stay warm. Water that is at least 18 inches deep will provide them with a "warm" home for the winter.

How to Get Your Pond Plants Ready for the Cold

If you wait too long to take care of your pond plants, you will end up with a pond full of rotting leaves and buds. Follow the tips below to make sure your pond's plant life is ready for the cold months ahead:

1. Trim bog and marsh plants before frost hits
2. Pull out water lilies and trim off ALL their leaves
3. Move all potted plants into the deepest area of your pond to prevent them from freezing
4. Save any tropical lilies by storing them in peat moss, or just discard them

Don't Worry, Your Pond Life Will Return

Remember, winter does not mark the death of your water garden. Instead, it is a time for your fish and plant life to rest up and get ready for yet another lively spring. If you follow the winterization tips outlined in my "How to Get Your Pond Ready for Winter" posts, you will be prepared to get your pond ready for the winter months ahead.

How to Get Your Pond Ready for Winter: Part 2

In my last post on pond winterization, I stressed the importance of leaving some debris in your pond during the cold winter months. I also pointed out how pond netting can help you achieve the perfect level of debris.

Today I'm going to be talking about the role of pond filters and pond pumps during the winter. If you're lucky enough to live in an area that doesn't get freezing temperatures, this won't apply much to you. But then again if you're one of those people, you probably aren't reading this post at all.

Rule #1: Remove your pond filter

For those of you who have a pond filter, now is the time to remove it. You don't need to filter the water during the cold winter months, and by leaving it in the water you are just putting it at risk for damage when your pond water freezes.

Rule #2: Utilize your pond pump as an oxygen provider

Even though your pond life goes into hibernation during the winter, it still needs oxygen to survive. The best way to provide this oxygen is by keeping your pond water moving. But how do you do this when the temperatures are cold enough to freeze your pond solid? Use a pond pump with a fountain.

The Benefits of Pond Pumps with Fountains

Submerged pond pumps with fountains provide a steady stream of oxygen to your pond life while keeping a portion of your pond water from freezing. Set the pump on bricks about a foot below the water to prevent it from getting clogged by any debris that's floating around.

A clogged pond pump can be incredibly disturbing to hibernating pond life, so you want to avoid this if at all possible. A clogged pump will also decrease the amount of output from the fountain - which in turn decreases the amount of oxygen being pushed through the water - so you definitely want to prevent that from happening.

If you don't have excessive freezing in your area, a pond pump with fountain may be a bit of overkill. In these cases, it might be better to use a floating pond heater.

Why You May Want to Consider a Floating Pond Heater

Pond heaters, also known as pond de-icers, create a small hole in frozen pond water that allows any toxic chemicals in the water to escape. These pond products don't remove an entire sheet of ice from your pond, but they provide a big enough hole that fresh, healthy oxygen can reach your pond life.

Whether we like to admit it or not, winter is rapidly approaching. Days are shorter and darker and temperatures are inevitably dropping. Most homeowners know how to get their yards ready for the cold months ahead, but they sometimes struggle to achieve the same level of preparation for their ponds.

Either they don't have the right pond supplies on hand or they use the right products at the wrong time. They may even do too much winter preparation which can be just as damaging as not doing enough.

This is going to be the first of several posts in which I share helpful tips on how to properly winterize your pond and ensure that the life within it emerges healthy and happy in the spring. For starters, I'm going to share some information that seem like a bit of a contradiction.

You want to leave some debris, dirt and mud in your pond when preparing it for winter.

Yes, you read that correctly. Some pond owners go a tad overboard with their pond cleaning. They drain out all the water, scrub the pond liner and refill the pond with fresh water. This is detrimental if winter is on the way. Frogs, snails and microscopic pond life rely on the mud at the bottom of your pond to keep them warm during winter. And your fish are counting on there being a cozy bed of leaves and disintegrated muck for them to hibernate in during the coldest days.

How Much Debris Should You Leave in Your Pond?

It's good practice to remove about 90% of the leaves and other debris that have accumulated in your pond throughout the fall. Leave the rest for your fish and other pond life to enjoy. You may be surprised at the diversity of life that emerges in spring if you leave a few natural resources in your pond to help new life flourish.

How Pond Netting Can Help

Keep in mind that trees are going to continue to dispel leaves, sticks and other miscellaneous debris all throughout the winter. If your pond isn't frozen, you don't want all this excess debris to build up and become overwhelming. Prevent this problem by covering your pond with some nearly invisible black pond netting. Pondliner Water Garden Expo 2010

In early February Pondliner hosted its annual two-day event for pond supply contractors and dealers around the country. Attendees had the opportunity to learn tricks and tips from industry experts, attend a trade show featuring the newest pond supplies and products, and partake in a series of seminars designed to get them in gear for 2010.

A variety of presentations and workshops were offered, and attendees were able to pick and choose which ones were most beneficial for them. The three seminar tracks were geared towards business, contractors and general information, so there was a wealth of knowledge to be gained by everyone. Each of the 103 attendees and all of the presenters and staff involved agreed that the event was a success.

The Water Garden Expo was an enjoyable event on several levels. As I discussed in my last blog post, Getting Your Pond Ready for Spring, it is important to give your pond a fresh start this season by cleaning out the old, dirty water and filling it with fresh, treated water. However, once your pond water has been swapped out, there are several additional steps you need to take to ensure that it stays balanced and can effectively support life.

Plants and fish are what help to make your pond a beautiful ecosystem. However, those same forms of life also create imbalances in the pond water that can cause problems if they aren’t monitored and dealt with effectively. Therefore, once you’ve done your spring cleaning and put new water in your pond, take the following steps to ensure that your backyard pond will function properly.

4 Steps to Balanced Pond Water and Healthy Pond Life

Balanced water is essential to creating and maintaining a healthy ecosystem in your backyard pond. It is important to equip yourself with the proper pond supplies for testing and treating your pod water, because it is necessary to regularly:

1. Use a test kit to monitor the pH, chlorine, nitrate, and ammonia levels in your pond.


2. Maintain ideal pH levels in your pond to keep your water clear and your fish and plant life healthy and happy. Good pH levels are right around 7.0, because that means water is neutral. Higher levels indicate too much ammonia build-up in the pond, and lower levels indicate that the water is too acidic and your fish aren’t getting enough oxygen. If levels are too high, excessive algae will grow, oxygen will be depleted, and your fish and other plant life will suffer. A good pond filter should help to get rid of most of the nitrate and ammonia build-up in your pond, and water plants can also help to keep levels low.

It is essential to regularly monitor and adjust each of these pond water components, because one of the most important aspects of plant and fish health is consistency. Fish in particular react poorly to abrupt changes – they are sensitive and delicate creatures, and it is up to you to create and maintain an ecosystem in which they can comfortable survive.

Getting Your Pond Ready for Spring

It's that time of year again – the ice and snow are starting to melt, the sun is coming out every once in a while, and people are able to see that warmer days are on the way. It's great news for those of you who have been hibernating in your homes for the past few months, and it's even better news for your backyard ponds.

Although your garden and lawn may require fairly aggressive makeovers once spring arrives, your backyard pond requires a gentler and more subtle approach to get it in shape for warmer weather. Spring into Action: Get Your Pond Ready for Warm Weather

As you have probably realized by now, taking care of your fish pond requires a great deal of tender loving care. Fish are delicate creatures, and they are especially weak after a long winter, so you have to be careful not to make any sudden changes that will upset their immune systems. That being said, we encourage you to follow these steps to safely get your pond spring-savvy in a snap:

1. Examine your pond for damage. It’s possible that your pond may have suffered some damage during the long winter. Check especially for tears in the lining, get rid of any accumulated debris, and inspect all hoses for punctures or leaks.


2. Remove winter equipment. If you installed a pond de-icer, now is the time to remove, dry and properly store it.


3. Give your pond a fresh start – clean out the dirty water. During winter a good deal of sludge has probably build up in your pond from fallen leaves, a mixture of melting snow and mud, and your fish's biological processes. Remove the fish gently using a pond skimmer and place them in a bucket filled with the original pond water. Remove the dirty water with buckets; rinse any gravel or rocks you have on the bottom; and scrub major dirt and muck off of your pond liner. *Note: don't scrub all the algae off of your pond liner – it is beneficial to the seasoning of the pond.
   
   
   • Be sure to save a portion of the original pond water to add to the new water. Doing so keeps some of the beneficial bacteria that aids in the biological processes the pond needs to properly function.


4. Fill the pond with fresh, treated water. If you use hose / tap water to refill your pond, be sure to treat it with chlorine removal solution so you don’t inadvertently poison your fish.


5. Clean your pond filter to get rid of any build-up and get it running (if it wasn't already.) Be sure to clean your pond filter parts in pond water, not hose / tap water, because the latter contains chlorine that will kill beneficial bacteria. Run the filter in shallow water at first to make sure that it is still functioning properly.


6. Reintegrate your fish into the new, clean pond water. Simply dumping your fish into the new pond water will shock their systems and could result in death. Therefore, let the bucket with your fish in it float in the new water for about an hour so the temperatures can neutralize. Then slowly and gently empty the bucket into the pond.

As you can see, spring cleaning is just as important in your backyard pond as it is inside your own home. There are many steps necessary to ensure that your pond and its inhabitants make the transition between winter dormancy and spring activity successfully, and Pondliner is committed to helping you each step of the way.

Fish Feeding Tips for Winter Weather

As the weather turns colder and the air temperature begins to drop, the fish in your backyard pond need to go on a cold water fish food diet. Lucky for them, their diet has nothing to do with losing weight, but if you don't administer it properly, they won't make it through the winter. This is because fish's digestive systems slow down as the weather cools, and they are unable to digest the same foods they consume during warmer months. If they cannot digest the food you are feeding them, it will sit in their system undigested, and this can result in intestinal or stomach ulceration. Koi are particularly susceptible to this, because they have no stomach and undigested food passes directly into their intestines to rot.

The first step to properly feeding your fish during the winter is knowing the temperature of their water. If you do not have a thermometer now is the time to get one, and Pondliner offers a reliable and inexpensive model. Suspend your thermometer in your backyard pond about 18 inches deep in the water to get accurate readings.

Once you have a thermometer, you can use the temperature of the water as your guide for what to feed your fish. Pond Leaf Netting Gone Wrong

Occasionally at Pondliner.com we get mail from customers who want to share a story about a pond product or pond experience.

Here is a letter we received about leaf netting that made me chuckle:

Dear Pondliner,

At the end of last season, I knew it was time to replace the leaf netting that I had been using for the past five years. I decided to go with the Premium Leaf Netting for my 20'x20' pond. It was a prefect fit. I was like a little boy again on Christmas morning, all excited to open and set up my latest pond purchase when it arrived. Like all other pond products, the leaf netting came with instructions on how to set it up, maintenance tips, and of course how to anchor it down.

After setting up my new leaf netting, I was sure my pond was safe from flying leaves and predators.

A few weeks later, I started to notice that leaves were in my pond. I was shocked because it was a brand-new leaf net. Being the self-proclaimed pond expert that I am, I was sure I did nothing wrong. So I thought. I removed the leaf netting and examined it for holes. Nothing. The leaf netting was good as new. I skimmed the top of my pond to remove the abundance of leaves and thought maybe they just slipped through the cracks. It has happened before, but I never had to skim out this many. I spent about two hours skimming the pond and wondering how this could have happened.

As I was putting the leaf netting back on my pond I noticed that some stakes used to anchor it down were missing. Again this was weird. I looked in the ground, nothing. I looked all around my yard, nothing. I was getting frustrated at this point. I lined up the leaf netting the same way I previously had it when I noticed there were no holes in the ground on one side of my pond. Yep, this pond expert forgot to properly secure his pond netting a few weeks earlier.

Point of the story, make sure that you properly anchor down your leaf netting and you won't have to rake out your pond like I did. OASE SwimSkim Product Review

The OASE SwimSkim is a unique self-contained in-pond skimmer that also functions as a pond aerator. The Swimskim is powered by an internal 580 gallon per hour magnetic-drive pump. Air is injected into the pump discharge to provide supplement aeration to the pond.

The SwimSkim catches larger debris in its leaf basket while a smaller foam pad traps smaller particles. The foam pad does clog rather quickly- usually in one to two days in my pond- but OASE did have the foresight to include an extra pad which makes maintenance a little easier.

Does the SwimSkim work? Absolutely. In my pond, I use it in an area that does not skim properly and don’t rely on it to skim my 18’ x 19’ pond. The aeration feature does inject a rather healthy stream of small bubbles 24” down into the pond.

The only downside to the Oase SwimSkim is the frequency in which the foam pad has to be cleaned. I do have a heavy fish load in my pond, so you may not have to clean the foam as often. Oase does have a larger SwimSkim model available in Europe. Hopefully, we will see it introduced in North America in 2011.
