What Your Fish Pond Liner Does for You

Anyone who has worked with backyard water gardens knows there are a variety of pond supplies that make these complex ecosystems tick. Although each of these pieces is important for the pond's overall function, it is the fish pond liner that really holds it all together.

Pond liners keep your backyard water garden functioning effectively - whether you have fish, plant life or both. They form the foundation of your pond, and they are responsible for keeping all the elements of your pond in place from season to season.

Because fish pond liners are responsible for so much, it makes sense that they need to be made from a durable material that can withstand just about anything. Your pond liner needs to:
  • Stay in place in freezing cold temperatures and incredibly hot ones
  • Remain strong against sharp objects that threaten to put holes or tears in it
  • Form a durable layer to contain your pond's water
  • Be free of algaecides and fire retardants, safe for fish and plant life and easy to install
As you can see, fish pond liners have a lot of big responsibilities. That's why it's important that you purchase a quality product and perform regular maintenance to help it stay in top condition for years to come.

There are two main types of pond liners you want to consider: PVC pond liners and EPDM pond liners. Both are safe for fish and designed to be extremely long lasting. Each one has different characteristics that make it attractive for pond owners. But if you purchase either of these types of liners from Pondliner. com, you can rest assured that you are getting a top-quality product that will last for many seasons.

Get fish pond liners and all the other pond supplies you need from Pondliner.com. We are dedicated to helping you build a healthy and happy backyard water garden you love.

Help Your Fish Weather The Cold With a Garden Pond Heater

The weather outside is certainly turning frightful for many areas across the country. Winter is officially here, folks, and for those of you who have backyard water gardens, this is a critical time of year.

Fish ponds are designed to survive in the outdoors all year long, but in the coldest temperatures they may need extra help that Mother Nature can't provide. If you live in an area of the country that doesn't reach extremely cold temperatures, you won't have to worry about your pond life freezing to death.

However, if you battle months of brutal winter weather, you need to make sure your fish and other pond life have the supplies they need to survive.

When stocking up on winter pond supplies, one of the most important things to purchase is a garden pond heater.

How Does a Garden Pond Heater Help My Pond Life Survive the Cold?

Once a pond is frozen over, the healthy exchange of gases that normally occurs between your pond's water and the air around it is eliminated. Toxic gases produced by your fish and plant life then have the opportunity to build up in the water and become harmful.

However, garden pond heaters, also known as pond de-icers, are designed to create a small hole in your pond's ice that allows toxic chemicals to escape the water. A garden pond heater will not remove an entire sheet of ice from your pond's surface, but it doesn't need to. As long as there is a small hole in the ice, gases can be exchanged and your pond life will not suffer.

Pondliner.com carries a variety of different garden pond heaters to meet your needs. Some float on the surface of your water while others are designed to be submerged. Browse our available products to find the model that will work best for your pond.

As always, if you have any questions about keeping your pond healthy throughout the winter, please contact one of our friendly and knowledgeable pond supplies experts.

Simplify Pond Winterization by Purchasing a Pond Kit

In my last three posts I gave you lots of tips and tricks for how to get your pond ready for winter. I talked about the benefits of pond heaters, pond pumps and pond netting, and I described why a certain amount of debris is a good thing. I also went over the basics of caring for your fish and pond plant during cold temperatures.

If you are a new pond owner, you may have found yourself a bit overwhelmed. There's a lot to remember, and your pond life is really relying on you to get it right.

If you want to make the pond winterization process as easy as possible, you may want to consider purchasing a complete winterizing kit. Similar to a standard pond kit, these comprehensive winterization tools can help make sure you have everything you need to maintain a healthy aquatic environment - even in the coldest temperatures.

Pondliner carries the Laguna complete winterization kit . It comes with the following parts:
Its purpose is to keep an area of your pond thawed in order to encourage the proper exchange of gases throughout the winter. Even if you pond freezes over, this winterization kit will keep a small area open to allow oxygen to get in and toxic gases to be released.

When you purchase the Laguna complete winterization kit, you will receive all the supplies mentioned above in one easy-to-manage box. The kits come with simple instructions that are designed to make the pond winterizing process as easy and straightforward as possible.

In addition to winterization kits, Pondliner also carries a variety of other pond supplies that can make sure your pond is winter-ready this season. Browse our complete selection today and get ready to get bundled up, because the cold is on its way!

How to Get Your Pond Ready for Winter: Part 3

In my final post on pond winterization, I will be discussing how to properly prepare your fish and plant life for the cold months ahead.

Getting Your Fish Ready for Winter

Many people are concerned about their fish not making it through the winter. However, if you follow these simple rules, you shouldn't have any problem:

Don't overfeed your fish. The metabolism of fish is controlled primarily by water temperature. This means that as your water gets colder, your fish need smaller amounts of food and less protein. Protein is harder to digest, so if you feed your fish high-protein food in cold water, they are going to excrete the extra as ammonia. A build-up of ammonia in the water stresses your fish and reduces their ability to survive.

How do you solve this problem? Once the water temperature drops to about 65 degrees Fahrenheit, start feeding your fish Spring & Autumn fish food. Then stop feeding your fish altogether once the temperature drops to about 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Their metabolism will be completely slowed down at that point, and they can survive without food until spring.

Make sure a section of your pond is at least 18 inches deep. As the weather gets colder, your fish will migrate to the deepest part of your pond to stay warm. Water that is at least 18 inches deep will provide them with a "warm" home for the winter.

How to Get Your Pond Plants Ready for the Cold

If you wait too long to take care of your pond plants, you will end up with a pond full of rotting leaves and buds. Follow the tips below to make sure your pond's plant life is ready for the cold months ahead:
  1. Trim bog and marsh plants before frost hits
  2. Pull out water lilies and trim off ALL their leaves
  3. Move all potted plants into the deepest area of your pond to prevent them from freezing
  4. Save any tropical lilies by storing them in peat moss, or just discard them
Don't Worry, Your Pond Life Will Return

Remember, winter does not mark the death of your water garden. Instead, it is a time for your fish and plant life to rest up and get ready for yet another lively spring. If you follow the winterization tips outlined in my "How to Get Your Pond Ready for Winter" posts, you will be prepared to get your pond ready for the winter months ahead.

Make sure you check out all the winterization pond supplies Pondliner has to help you get your pond through the cold winter months.

How to Get Your Pond Ready for Winter: Part 2

In my last post on pond winterization, I stressed the importance of leaving some debris in your pond during the cold winter months. I also pointed out how pond netting can help you achieve the perfect level of debris.

Today I'm going to be talking about the role of pond filters and pond pumps during the winter. If you're lucky enough to live in an area that doesn't get freezing temperatures, this won't apply much to you. But then again if you're one of those people, you probably aren't reading this post at all.

Rule #1: Remove your pond filter

For those of you who have a pond filter, now is the time to remove it. You don't need to filter the water during the cold winter months, and by leaving it in the water you are just putting it at risk for damage when your pond water freezes.

Rule #2: Utilize your pond pump as an oxygen provider

Even though your pond life goes into hibernation during the winter, it still needs oxygen to survive. The best way to provide this oxygen is by keeping your pond water moving. But how do you do this when the temperatures are cold enough to freeze your pond solid? Use a pond pump with a fountain.

The Benefits of Pond Pumps with Fountains

Submerged pond pumps with fountains provide a steady stream of oxygen to your pond life while keeping a portion of your pond water from freezing. Set the pump on bricks about a foot below the water to prevent it from getting clogged by any debris that's floating around.

A clogged pond pump can be incredibly disturbing to hibernating pond life, so you want to avoid this if at all possible. A clogged pump will also decrease the amount of output from the fountain - which in turn decreases the amount of oxygen being pushed through the water - so you definitely want to prevent that from happening.

If you don't have excessive freezing in your area, a pond pump with fountain may be a bit of overkill. In these cases, it might be better to use a floating pond heater.

Why You May Want to Consider a Floating Pond Heater

Pond heaters, also known as pond de-icers, create a small hole in frozen pond water that allows any toxic chemicals in the water to escape. These pond products don't remove an entire sheet of ice from your pond, but they provide a big enough hole that fresh, healthy oxygen can reach your pond life.

Stay tuned...

As you can see, pond pumps play an important role in keeping your pond healthy throughout the cold winter months. In my next post I'll be talking about how to get your fish, plants and and other pond life ready for freezing temperatures. In the meantime, browse our website to make sure you have all the pond supplies you need for the rapidly approaching cold.

How to Get Your Pond Ready for Winter: Part 1

Whether we like to admit it or not, winter is rapidly approaching. Days are shorter and darker and temperatures are inevitably dropping. Most homeowners know how to get their yards ready for the cold months ahead, but they sometimes struggle to achieve the same level of preparation for their ponds.

Either they don't have the right pond supplies on hand or they use the right products at the wrong time. They may even do too much winter preparation which can be just as damaging as not doing enough.

This is going to be the first of several posts in which I share helpful tips on how to properly winterize your pond and ensure that the life within it emerges healthy and happy in the spring. For starters, I'm going to share some information that seem like a bit of a contradiction.

You want to leave some debris, dirt and mud in your pond when preparing it for winter.

Yes, you read that correctly. Some pond owners go a tad overboard with their pond cleaning. They drain out all the water, scrub the pond liner and refill the pond with fresh water. This is detrimental if winter is on the way. Frogs, snails and microscopic pond life rely on the mud at the bottom of your pond to keep them warm during winter. And your fish are counting on there being a cozy bed of leaves and disintegrated muck for them to hibernate in during the coldest days.

How Much Debris Should You Leave in Your Pond?

It's good practice to remove about 90% of the leaves and other debris that have accumulated in your pond throughout the fall. Leave the rest for your fish and other pond life to enjoy. You may be surprised at the diversity of life that emerges in spring if you leave a few natural resources in your pond to help new life flourish.

How Pond Netting Can Help

Keep in mind that trees are going to continue to dispel leaves, sticks and other miscellaneous debris all throughout the winter. If your pond isn't frozen, you don't want all this excess debris to build up and become overwhelming. Prevent this problem by covering your pond with some nearly invisible black pond netting. (We're currently running a special offering 15% off our premium pond netting, so now is a great time to stock up on this important pond product.)

Stay tuned for more helpful pond winterization tips coming your way this month, and be sure to browse our website to find all the pond supplies you need to get your pond ready for the season's coldest temperatures.

Protect Your Pond This Fall with Fish Pond Netting

With fall quickly arriving, homeowners across the country are getting ready to tackle falling leaves of every size, shape and color. However, when you own a backyard water garden, these leaves can cause quite a problem.

That's because when leaves fall into your pond, they don't stay on the surface. They tend to sink to the bottom where they can clog your pond pump or cause a variety of other maintenance issues. Wet leaves are also difficult to remove from your pond, and if they stay in the water for too long they can start to decompose and release harmful toxins.

However, you don't have to worry about any of these problems if you purchase fish pond netting from Pondliner.com. Fish pond netting provides a virtually invisible protective barrier that keeps falling leaves and other debris out of your pond water. Any debris collects on top of the pond netting which leaves the water beneath it as clean and clear as ever. In addition, fish pond netting is useful for protecting your pond life from any potential predators.

Right now we're running a special on Laguna Fish Pond Netting. You can get 20% off when you purchase either the 15' x 12' pond net, the 15' x 20' pond net or the 20' x 30' pond net. Now is the time to save on this important piece of pond equipment.

Take advantage of all the great deals we offer on the pond supplies you want most. Fall is here and winter is right around the corner, so it's time to make sure your pond has everything it needs to tackle the season's coldest weather.

Pressurized Pond Filters Provide Plenty of Benefits for Your Pond

By now you all know the benefit of pond filters: They help keep your pond clean by getting rid of various kinds of debris and biological waste.

You also know that there are many different kinds of pond filters that offer varying levels and types of filtration. The kind I'm excited to tell you about today is called a pressurized pond filter.

This particular kind of filter is incredibly efficient and provides the maximum benefit for your pond. It is contained within the piping of a pond pump or within the pump itself which greatly increases efficiency and allows for a more thorough cleaning of your pond water.

Because of their unique design, pressurized pond filters also prevent any excess filter residue from seeping into the water. This allows them to provide the cleanest water possible which in turn minimizes the amount of work you need to do.

Since they're contained within a pond pump, pressurized pond filters can also be used in place of a water feature. This essentially allows them to serve as two pond products in one, and as a result you can save a great deal of time, money and effort when it comes to pond cleaning and water feature accents.

Pressurized pond filters often cost a little more than their traditional counterparts, but the benefits they provide far outweigh the additional cost. They're more efficient and generally provide cleaner, healthier water.

Pondliner carries a variety of pressurized pond filters, and one of our most popular brands is the Laguna Pressure-Flo Pond Filter. Check it out today to see if this model will meet your pond's needs.

As always, don't forget that Pondliner carries all the pond supplies you need to keep your pond life healthy and happy year-round. Take advantage of low prices by shopping our Bargain Basement and checking out our latest promotional coupons today.

Pond liners are the true foundation of your pond, and they are ultimately responsible for keeping everything in it functioning properly. Knowing that, it can be intimidating to try to choose the right kind of liner and determine which size you need.

The last thing you want to do is leave part of your pond bottom exposed or have excess liner bunching up around the sides. However, trying to calculate the measurements you need can oftentimes be more complicated than helpful. Thankfully, you don’t have to worry about any of these problems when you use our helpful and efficient pond liner calculator.

Determine your pond’s volume in gallons by entering its average length, width and depth. Then figure out which size liner will best fit your pond by entering its maximum length, width and depth. Hit the calculate button and your pond volume and liner size will be instantly displayed on the screen.

If you are unsure how to measure your pond, our pond liner calculator outlines the process step by step, clearly identifying how to properly measure for each element needed.

Keep in mind that your pond liner should have enough surface area to follow the contours of the pond bed and leave about a one foot margin around the pond edge. Ideally, you want to install permanent pond liners that are durable enough to withstand a variety of weather and water conditions. This will save you the hassle of having to regularly replace this integral part of your pond.

If you’re wondering which kind of pond liner to purchase, we strongly recommend you consider either PVC or EPDM pond liners. Both are durable and strong, lightweight and easy to maneuver, safe for fish and long-lasting.

Utilize Pond Filters for a Healthy and Happy Pond This Season

As any successful pond owner knows, the key to having a healthy pond is to have a clean pond. In my previous posts I’ve discussed how you can utilize pond skimmers and pond vacuums to clean dirt and debris from your pond’s water. However, in order to keep your pond water as clean and healthy as possible, it’s also necessary to install a pond filter.

Out of all the pond supplies your water garden needs to flourish, pond filters are one of the most important. These small machines work around the clock as mini sewage systems for your pond. Every day fish waste, extra food and other organic material falls to the bottom of your pond. All of this debris can dirty your pond water, and as it starts to decompose it can also release harmful toxins. Without pond filters, your pond water would be permanently murky and any dangerous toxins would build up and start to affect the health of your pond life.

Pond filters utilize filter media to break down harmful toxins and remove debris from your pond water to create a healthy environment in which pond life can flourish. They come in different sizes and offer varying degrees of filtration so you can shop around until you find one that meets your pond’s specific needs.

Any good pond filter is designed to perform three functions:

• Mechanical Filtration
• Biological Filtration
• Chemical Filtration

Mechanical filtration is utilized to remove actual detritus from your water. Dirty water flows into the filter and the mechanical filtration media traps any dirt before sending clean water back into your pond.

Biological filtration tackles the toxins that form when fish waste and other organic material breaks down. This filtration media allows beneficial bacteria to grow that can biologically break down the harmful toxins in your pond water.

Chemical filter media and pond plants manage any remaining compounds by controlling and changing the specific water conditions that are negatively impacting your pond.

As you can see, pond filters work hard to keep your water sparkling clean. Be sure to utilize this pond product to keep your pond life happy and healthy this season.

Promote Pond Health: Purchase a Pond Skimmer This Season

It’s official – warm weather is here to stay, and that’s good news for all you pond enthusiasts who have been itching to sit outside and enjoy your pond in all its glory. Make sure your pond stays clean and healthy by purchasing and installing a quality pond skimmer this season.

There is no substitute for these efficient and effective pond supplies. A pond skimmer is your biggest defense against leaves, branches, pollen, flowers and other pesky debris that threaten to dirty your water and clog your pond filter. It collects particles from the surface of the water allowing it to always appear clear and healthy-looking. The best part about pond skimmers, however, is that they don’t detract from your pond’s aesthetic appeal.

Pond skimmers are designed to be easily hidden or disguised so that your pond remains natural-looking and beautiful. Some come with artificial covers while others can be easily concealed by shrubbery. In addition to providing complete filtration, a good pond skimmer should also:

• Support biological health
• Improve water quality
• Reduce pond maintenance
• Hide unsightly pumps and plumbing
• Prevent large debris from clogging your pond filter
• Keep pond life safe, healthy and happy

Many pond skimmers also come with a variety of accessories that allow you to customize your model for every application. They should be built tough to handle foot traffic and support any kind of natural camouflage you want to use.

Browse our collection of pond skimmers today – find the one that best meets your needs and start seeing a better-looking, healthier pond today.

Clean Your Pond the Easy Way with Pond Vacuums

In my previous post on “Getting Your Pond Ready for Spring” I discussed the importance of cleaning your pond in preparation for the spring season. However, now that the season is well under way, you need to continue working to maintain that level of cleanliness. Your pond life will only flourish in a healthy environment, and keeping the water clean is one major aspect of that.

Pond skimmers are a great way to collect debris and dirt from the surface of the water on a daily basis, but sometimes your pond needs a more thorough cleaning. Small and stubborn detritus that slips through the average pond skimmer can build up over time and dirty your pond water. Prevent this from happening by regularly using a pond vacuum.

Pond vacuums are some of the most popular pond supplies, because they are convenient, easy to use and make cleaning your pond a snap. They work just like the vacuum cleaner you use inside your home, but they suction algae blooms, fish waste, dead leaves, and other dirt out of your pond. Pond vacuums are particularly effective at cleaning the stubborn debris that settles and sticks to your pond’s floor.

A quality pond vacuum should come with a variety of different nozzles that will enable you to reach every nook and cranny of your pond. They are available in different watt capacities so you can choose one that has the right amount of power for you. Some other features that can be helpful are:

• A multi-chambered system
• Rigid suction tubes
• An extension pole
• Large debris bag
A cordless option

Keep your pond clean and healthy this season. Find the pond vacuum that best meets your needs today!

Test and Treat Your Pond Water Today

As I discussed in my last blog post, Getting Your Pond Ready for Spring, it is important to give your pond a fresh start this season by cleaning out the old, dirty water and filling it with fresh, treated water. However, once your pond water has been swapped out, there are several additional steps you need to take to ensure that it stays balanced and can effectively support life.

Plants and fish are what help to make your pond a beautiful ecosystem. However, those same forms of life also create imbalances in the pond water that can cause problems if they aren’t monitored and dealt with effectively. Therefore, once you’ve done your spring cleaning and put new water in your pond, take the following steps to ensure that your backyard pond will function properly.

4 Steps to Balanced Pond Water and Healthy Pond Life

Balanced water is essential to creating and maintaining a healthy ecosystem in your backyard pond. It is important to equip yourself with the proper pond supplies for testing and treating your pod water, because it is necessary to regularly:
  1. Use a test kit to monitor the pH, chlorine, nitrate, and ammonia levels in your pond.

  2. Maintain ideal pH levels in your pond to keep your water clear and your fish and plant life healthy and happy. Good pH levels are right around 7.0, because that means water is neutral. Higher levels indicate too much ammonia build-up in the pond, and lower levels indicate that the water is too acidic and your fish aren’t getting enough oxygen. You can do partial water changes to help balance the pH levels, and if they continually fluctuate into dangerous levels, you can use a buffer such as calcium carbonate in small amounts to help regulate.

  3. Eliminate any chlorine detected in the water by using a dechlorinator or chlorine neutralizer. Chlorine prevents beneficial bacteria from growing.

  4. Monitor the amount of nitrate and ammonia in your pond. Both of these chemicals are a result of the metabolic waste produced by your fish. If levels are too high, excessive algae will grow, oxygen will be depleted, and your fish and other plant life will suffer. A good pond filter should help to get rid of most of the nitrate and ammonia build-up in your pond, and water plants can also help to keep levels low.
It is essential to regularly monitor and adjust each of these pond water components, because one of the most important aspects of plant and fish health is consistency. Fish in particular react poorly to abrupt changes – they are sensitive and delicate creatures, and it is up to you to create and maintain an ecosystem in which they can comfortable survive.

Getting Your Pond Ready for Spring

Pond Supplies for Spring

It's that time of year again – the ice and snow are starting to melt, the sun is coming out every once in a while, and people are able to see that warmer days are on the way. It's great news for those of you who have been hibernating in your homes for the past few months, and it's even better news for your backyard ponds.

Although your garden and lawn may require fairly aggressive makeovers once spring arrives, your backyard pond requires a gentler and more subtle approach to get it in shape for warmer weather. Arm yourself with the proper pond supplies and head outside – your pond and its inhabitants are anxiously waiting!

Spring into Action: Get Your Pond Ready for Warm Weather

As you have probably realized by now, taking care of your fish pond requires a great deal of tender loving care. Fish are delicate creatures, and they are especially weak after a long winter, so you have to be careful not to make any sudden changes that will upset their immune systems. That being said, we encourage you to follow these steps to safely get your pond spring-savvy in a snap:
  1. Examine your pond for damage. It’s possible that your pond may have suffered some damage during the long winter. Check especially for tears in the lining, get rid of any accumulated debris, and inspect all hoses for punctures or leaks.

  2. Remove winter equipment. If you installed a pond de-icer, now is the time to remove, dry and properly store it.

  3. Give your pond a fresh start – clean out the dirty water. During winter a good deal of sludge has probably build up in your pond from fallen leaves, a mixture of melting snow and mud, and your fish's biological processes. Remove the fish gently using a pond skimmer and place them in a bucket filled with the original pond water. Remove the dirty water with buckets; rinse any gravel or rocks you have on the bottom; and scrub major dirt and muck off of your pond liner. *Note: don't scrub all the algae off of your pond liner – it is beneficial to the seasoning of the pond.

    • Be sure to save a portion of the original pond water to add to the new water. Doing so keeps some of the beneficial bacteria that aids in the biological processes the pond needs to properly function.

  4. Fill the pond with fresh, treated water. If you use hose / tap water to refill your pond, be sure to treat it with chlorine removal solution so you don’t inadvertently poison your fish.

  5. Clean your pond filter to get rid of any build-up and get it running (if it wasn't already.) Be sure to clean your pond filter parts in pond water, not hose / tap water, because the latter contains chlorine that will kill beneficial bacteria. Run the filter in shallow water at first to make sure that it is still functioning properly.

  6. Reintegrate your fish into the new, clean pond water. Simply dumping your fish into the new pond water will shock their systems and could result in death. Therefore, let the bucket with your fish in it float in the new water for about an hour so the temperatures can neutralize. Then slowly and gently empty the bucket into the pond.
As you can see, spring cleaning is just as important in your backyard pond as it is inside your own home. There are many steps necessary to ensure that your pond and its inhabitants make the transition between winter dormancy and spring activity successfully, and Pondliner is committed to helping you each step of the way.
